In a previous post, I outlined how to backup your Mac very easily with an external harddrive and the wonderful program SuperDuper.
While that is a great way to make sure you don’t lose important files, pictures, and the like, there is still one problem: all of your data is still in the same physical location (e.g., your house, bedroom, basement, etc…). What if there is a terrible lightning storm that fries your components? What if something worse happens?
The best way to ensure you don’t lose your important data is to backup data to a remote, offsite location. That way your data is safe, even if your main computer or main backup drive aren’t :-)
And how to do this? Simply: Mozy to the rescue! For only $5 a month for unlimited space (or use their free account for 2GB of space), this small application will run on your computer and you can choose which folders or sets of files to backup. It will automatically upload these files to their servers, encrypting all of your data so it is completely safe. In the event you need to restore data, you can download this data to any computer or request a next day delivery of all your data on a DVD, talk about easy!
If you haven’t already backed up your data, I highly recommend you do it now :-) It’s not a question of if your harddrive or computer will fail, but rather when. Every computer and harddrive has a MTBF, e.g., mean time between failure. It’s gonna happen sooner or later, so backup that data today!
